First, I think there is a paucity of women's literacy in your findings so far. It is not clear what the level is nor how it is broadly defined in each period of time referred to. In contrast Male literacy seems to be ubiquitous at a various levels and demonstrated in a number of ways.
Focus must be difficult when you are working with so many strands and branches.
Nevertheless, it is fascinating stuff.
You bet that a woman who can run a business must be literate. That, like many things, is not safe to bet on. There have been many clever but uneducated women in history who have been very skilful in running their husband's affairs when they were away from home, sometimes for years and years. It is possible that some women were self-taught, they were able enough to do that. Memory and strategies are powerful devices with which to operate.

ZACL,
I'm glad you think this fascinating.
All those comments you made are something to think about.
I hope the cultural thoughts of others, me, for example, (non-Japanese) may have some substance to consider in the general process of discovery.
I marvel at the way you seem to effortlessly move from art forms such as haiku, tanka and drawings into genealogy!
:)
Thank you, ZACL, for understanding! More to come!
